Teachers of All Ages Come to Peru
ESL, Music, and Construction - Oh my!
Did you know? Peru 109 isn't just for college students! Applicants for our upcoming community projects boast an age range of 16 to 68. And as our advertising spans from New Hampshire, to Texas, to Oregon, to Canada, we are building our most diverse project teams yet! We count on the variety of backgrounds, personalities, and skills of our volunteers to make each Peru 109 journey unforgettable for everyone we work with. Check out our week long projects in August, September, and October -- and let us know which one fits YOU!

CP's in San Sebastian Take Shape!
Community Project: Fundraising with People with Disabilities
In collaboration with the director and members of AFUVAPEDISS, a local organization run by and for people with mental and physical disabilities in San Sebastian, Peru 109 volunteers are spear-heading an ongoing fundraising campaign. This week, volunteers are teaching AFUVAPEDISS members how to bake child-friendly recipes to sell during recess at local schools who have agreed to support their community project. After packaging the baked goods with the organization label, it’s off to recess! All proceeds will go directly to cover costs of transporation to and from medical appointments and AFUVAPEDISS meetings. Part II of this CP includes working with the public bus system in order to provide handicapped-accessible seating.

Community Project: Health Education

Another project team has decided to devote their energy to expand the teaching of sex education in the local schools. Primarily concentrating on contraception methods, disease/infection prevention, and healthy relationships, these volunteers are collaborating with a local branch of government-run Centro de Salud. The group will create a user-friendly paper version of the health education training program for school teachers. Currently, the training program is only on CD, which requires access to expensive electronic equipment, a significant limiting factor in the ability to put the program into action.

Community Project: English as a Second Language

A third project team is offering conversational English classes to university students who are majoring in Language Studies, with a concentration on pronunciation. At the same time, the volunteers are teaching the children at two different pre-kindergarten programs. With the help and support of a group of youth in San Sebastian, these programs will continue even after Peru 109 volunteers return to the states in August.

Community Project: Sustainable Garden for Survivors of Domestic Violence

At the Casa Acogida, a temporary shelter for female survivors of domestic violence and their children, Peru 109 is working with the local women's club to prepare and plant the first section of a vegetable garden. Families are provided with a safe home at the Casa Acogida for up to one month, during which time they have access to counseling and legal assistance. With the construction of the garden, the women will also have the opportunity to develop a skill that may allow them to be more economically self sufficient. Families will be able to grow vegetables not only for their own grocery supply, but also to sell at the local markets.
