Music in Motion
11-Day Program in Trujillo
(September 5 - 15, 2008)

This service trip is designed with the musical in mind. As a volunteer in the Spring City of Trujillo, you will experience the perfect blend of community service, cultural immersion, and leisure activities.

LOCATION: Trujillo | here |

COMMUNITY PROJECT: Every day of the week, you and your fellow volunteers will visit a different school or nonprofit organization in Trujillo. No matter what the location -- preschool, high school, homeless shelter, orphanage, etc -- you will spend the day getting to know the people that make up the organization, and introduce them to your special gift of music. Every evening, you, the other Peru 109 volunteers, and the people you have met that day will celebrate with a performance that showcases not only your musical talents, but also the talents of the new friends you have made that day.

LANGUAGE STUDY : Whether you are a beginner or advanced speaker of Spanish, you will be able to put your language skills to use beginning with your arrival to the airport in Lima. Regardless of whether you choose to take individualized Spanish classes, you will have 10 full days of reading, writing, speaking, and listening to Spanish. There is no better way to learn! With your host family, you'll also experience traditional Peruvian home cooking and family life. Find out what it's like to live in "Peruvian time", and take advantage of all of the fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains that Peru is known for. At night, take a salsa or meringue class, walk around the plaza, or relax at home with friends and family

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES: Before the Incas built Machu Picchu, the Chimus built Chan Chan! The pre-Incan ruins of Chan Chan are the most famous Chimu ruins in Peru that date back more than 1,000 years. You'll have the opportunity to tour this amazing site, and afterwards, you can relax by the Pacific Ocean at the beach called Huanchaco. In Huanchaco, you can take a surfing lesson, rent a "caballito de totora", enjoy fresh "ceviche", visit the street local street vendors, or take in some sun on the sand. Still need something to write home about? How about SANDboarding? You'll get to try this sport that you can only practice with sand dunes as big and beautiful as the natural dunes that are found on the Peruvian coast.
