Winter Volunteer in Chimbote
Self-Direct and Connect Program
Dec. 2010 - January and February 2011

It might be winter in the US, but it’s SUMMER here! If you’re looking for a place off the beaten path, this Peru 109 location is for you. Because Chimbote is relatively “untouched” by tourism, volunteers will be immersed in a way that other locations cannot match!

You’ll have the chance to create and lead summer programs for the students of Mi Segundo Hogar, a small school in the neighborhood called Miraflores Bajo. Mi Segundo Hogar is proud to offer low-cost education for neighborhood families and about 200 children ages 3 through 16.

On the weekdays, you’ll work with the children, staff, and families of Mi Segundo Hogar through one or all of the site community projects: recreational camp, summer studies, and facility improvements. Twice a week you'll take the kids on a road trip to the sand dunes for a Sandboarding session or to the Besique, Tortugas beach for a refreshing Summer's day.

On the weekends, you’ll have time to hike Chimbote’s Cerro de la Paz that overlooks the harbor, visit the temple ruins of Sechin, or explore the “Isla Blanca” just minutes from the Chimbote shore. Or, you may decide to spend a day sandboarding on the surrounding impressive dunes, or relaxing at one of the nearby beaches.
